Energy and Water Saving Tips for Home Appliance Users
By Hannah Forbes | First published: 14th January 2025
In today’s climate-conscious world, many of us are seeking ways to reduce energy consumption and lower our bills. If you’re renting appliances through Forbes, you already know the value of convenience and efficiency. But did you know that small adjustments to how you use your appliances could make a big difference to your household’s water and energy usage?
According to recent insights from The Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances, using eco settings on dishwashers and washing machines can lead to substantial savings.
Here's how:
Modern dishwashers and washing machines come equipped with eco settings designed to use less water and energy. Switching to these programmes could save up to 15,000 litres of water per year compared to standard cycles. That's enough to significantly cut down on water waste while ensuring your dishes and laundry are still sparkling clean.
By reducing the amount of water heated during these cycles, you’re also saving energy. This could contribute to lowering your energy bill by up to £165 annually.
As stated by AMDEA, the average person in England uses 144 litres of water daily, with even higher averages in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. However, official targets aim to reduce this to 122 litres per person by 2037. By adopting eco settings and switching to shorter showers as opposed to baths, households can comfortably surpass these goals whilst reducing their household's environmental impact.
AMDEA state that ‘The total saved for those who do not already use eco programmes and take short showers could be as much as 24%[v] of a typical home's water consumption, comfortably below the level of the England target. And adopting these measures to reduce the amount of water heated would also save enough energy to power a television 24/7 for an entire year.’
